Product Description
1885 Antique COLT Model 1878 “FRONTIER” .45 Caliber DOUBLE ACTION Revolver
“Double Action Army” .45 Caliber Colt Made in 1885
Here we present an antique Colt 1878 Double Action Frontier Revolver, made in 1885 in Hartford, Connecticut.
The M1878 was designed by William Mason, Colt’s factory manager and Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, Superintendent of Engineering. The 1878 Frontier was a much larger and more reliable version of the Model 1877 Lightning and Thunderer, Colt’s first double action revolver. The 1878 Frontier also offered a much more comprehensive array of calibers, compared to the 1877’s three offerings. Despite all of this, the Model 1877 was clearly the popular favorite as over 166,000 were produced versus 51,210 of the Model 1878 made between 1878 through 1907.
The overall condition is good. Original blue finish and gray patina. The action functions. The bore is gray with strong rifling. Knob absent the back of the loading gate. This is a nice example of the Double Action Army in the famous “Colt .45” to add to your Wild West collection!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
