Here we present an antique Colt Black Powder Frame Single Action Army Revolver in .45, manufactured in 1876 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt “Peacemaker” was introduced in 1873 and has become one of the most iconic firearms in all of history, thanks to its widespread use by the U.S. military, civilians and, more recently, in Western films.

Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.

This one has been there and done that! Old plum patina. The action is functional with a strong mainspring. The hammer will hit the half-cock notch and full-cock notch, producing 3 clicks total. The cylinder indexes and locks up, but has some shake. The barrel was very likely 7 ½ inches originally and it was cut down flush with the end of the ejector rod housing either out of preference for a shorter piece or because the muzzle end of the barrel sustained some sort of damage. A new front sight was installed, which does have a tiny bit of play today. The numbers on the barrel, frame, cylinder, and trigger guard match while the grip frame is a different number—what is interesting is that both numbers are from the same year of manufacture and wear the exact same patina. It looks like this gun has been in its current configuration for much longer than otherwise. The bone grips certainly didn’t come from the factory! They too are worn down and significantly slighter in the hand than either the walnut or hard rubber grips from the factory. This is a neat old piece; if only it could tell stories!
