1873 Antique FRENCH CHATELLERAULT M1845 Infantry OFFICER’S Sword w/SCABBARD
BRASS HILT, WIRE WRAPPED GRIP and IRON SCABBARD
Here we present an antique French Chatellerault Model 1845/55 Infantry Officer’s Sword, manufactured in 1872. French Model 1845 Infantry Officers Sword had a production run between 1845 and the 1880s, with this example being made by Manufacture Nationale d’armes de Chatellerault in 1872.
This was the standard French Infantry Officer’s Sword in use from 1845 into the 1880s when it was replaced by the French Model 1882. The Model 1845/55 is basically the same as the French Model 1845, but with the modifications adopted in 1855, which included the re-shape of the blade and the change from the standard leather scabbard body to a metal scabbard body.
From the jungles of Indochina to the burning sands of the Sahara, and to the bloody trenches of the First World War, this sword served France and her empire for almost 100 years. The overall length of this sword is 36 inches and the blade measures 30 inches with manufacturer markings on the spine.
The overall condition is good. The blade finish is now a gray patina. Solid hilt with a nice wood grip and tight twisted wire. The scabbard is sturdy and remains in good shape. Markings are legible.
Overall length: 35-1/2 inches.
Blade length: 30 inches.
