1870s W.H. Horstmann FIRST TROOP, PHILADELPHIA CITY CAVALRY Sword SCABBARD
Seldom Seen Sword with PORTEPEE Sword Knot
Here we present an antique First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry Sword, made circa the mid-1870s in Solingen, Prussia. This seldom seen sword is a post-Civil War officer’s original, non-government regulation cavalry saber identified to the First Troop, Philadelphia City Cavalry. Manufactured by one of the sword firms of Solingen, Prussia (now Germany), this blade was imported and assembled circa the 1870s-1880s, by William H. Horstmann and Sons, a well-known sword retailer and importer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This handsome, slightly curved, high quality steel blade follows the Model 1833 Pattern Dragoon Saber and measures 33″ long. Width is 1-1/8″. At the blade’s obverse ricasso is the Horstmann stamp of the standing figure within a circle whose outer border reads “W. H. HORSTMANN COMPANY PHILADELPHIA”.
Above the maker’s mark is a foliage design that incorporates a floral motif of leaves and acorns with the letters “F.T.P.C.C.” (First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry) above.
The overall condition is fine. The blade finish is bright and remains nicely etched. “26” is marked on the spine and scabbard. Solid hilt all around. Good scabbard.
Overall length is 37-1/2 inches.
Blade length is 32 inches.
