Dated “1864” & MARTIALLY INSPECTED
Here we present an antique U.S. Ames Model 1840 Light Artillery Saber, made circa 1864 in Chicopee, Massachusetts. The Model 1840 features a beautifully curved blade with a single brass knuckle bow instead of a basket hilt. The grip is wrapped in leather and braided wire. Ames address on the left side of the ricasso along with the date. The right side of the ricasso is marked “U.S./M.M./1864”. The inspector’s initials belong to Sub-Ordnance Inspector M. Moulton. The overall length is 37-3/4 inches with the blade measuring 32 inches. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Artillery Troops.
