1863 EMERSON & SILVER Antique CIVIL WAR Era U.S. M1840 MUSICIAN’S Sword
Made for the Man Who Carried a “MUSICAL INSTRUMENT”
Here we present an antique Emerson & Silver U.S. Model 1840 Musician’s Sword, manufactured in 1863 in Trenton, New Jersey. The M1840 Musician’s Sword was quite literally made for the man in uniform who more frequently wielded a musical instrument than a firearm. The story has it that the concept for such a weapon materialized during the American Revolutionary War, when soldier musicians would walk onto the battlefield with the regular men, and if necessary, would have to defend themselves with their blades.
This 1863 dated Emerson & Silver Model 1840 Musician’s sword has a 28 inch straight blade with an overall length of 34 inches. The left side is marked “EMERSON/&/SILVER/TRENTON/N.J.”. The right ricasso is marked “US/ DFM/ 1863”. The initials were for sub-ordnance inspector Dexter F. Mosman. The brass hilt is marked “NP 368 26”. Also included is an iron scabbard.
The overall condition is very good. Straight blade. Bright, clear markings. The sword and scabbard are numbered to one another. Solid hilt. Martially inspected. Metal scabbard has patina and minor dents throughout.
Overall length is 34 inches.
