1862 CIVIL WAR Era Antique COLLINS & CO. Model 1840 Commercial NCO Sword
Non-Commissioned Officers Sword with IRON SCABBARD
Here we present an antique Collins & Co. Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officers Sword, made in 1862 in Hartford, Connecticut. Collins was a well known Civil War sword maker and produced a wide variety of blades. In 1862 his company received a U.S. Ordnance Department contract for 548 NCO swords in the 1840 Pattern, which he delivered on time. These are extremely rare. This example is the commercially produced sword, identified by the use of the Collins & Co. stamp of the ricasso that incorporates an 1862 date.
The Model 1840 NCO was issued to sergeants as a secondary weapon. It saw use primarily during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. The tradition of arming sergeants with swords as a badge of rank was an old one in the army and sometimes would extend to the rank of corporal in the volunteer regiments. This is a nice example of a non-regulation sword.
The overall condition is good. The blade is bright. Solid hilt. Markings are legible. The scabbard is good and allows for a smooth draw.
Overall length is 38-1/2 inches.
Blade length is 32 inches.
