1860s mfr Antique RR MOORE TARGET LONG RIFLE .38 Caliber Cortland, New York
Octagonal Barrel w/BRASS FURNITURE
Here we present an antique R.R. Moore Percussion Long Rifle made circa the 1860s-70s in Cortland, New York. Rensselaer R. Moore worked in Cortland circa 1866 to 1877 after previously working in Cincinnatus. Moore was a very well respected gunmaker who built rifles that were used as sniper rifles in the American Civil War. This example is a post-war rifle. Finding a rifle of this type, from this period without any shooter alterations is very unusual, making this a very nice American percussion rifle. The barrel on this example is marked “R.R. MOORE / CORTLAND / N.Y. No. 1398”.
This example’s stout octagonal barrel is in .38 caliber, large enough to take small to medium sized game or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression, but this was built to be a precise rifle as well. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time.
The overall condition is very good. Original, smooth brown patina. Strong action. The bore is bright and nicely rifled. Legible markings. Solid stock overall, contains only average wear. The rear peep is a neat feature.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
