1860s Date CIVIL WAR Antique C. ROBY US M1860 Light CAVALRY Saber SCABBARD
American Civil War UNION CAVALRY BLADE
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, made circa 1864 in West Chelmsford, Massachusetts by the Christopher Roby Company. This example is dated 186*, with the last number worn off. Christopher Roby maintained a steady business making items like scythes and other farm implements until the embargo on the South during the American Civil War caused him to seek other product lines to make ends meet.
In 1862 he began contracting with the U.S. to provide several different models of sword. His wartime production of swords numbered 48,410 compared to hundreds of thousands produced by companies like Ames. Roby was commissioned on September 5, 1864 to raise up his own local cavalry, of which he was elected Captain, to be protectors against Confederate raids in northern Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the company was bankrupt by 1867, a mere 2 years after the end of the war. This saber would have been used in the American Civil War by Union Horsemen.
The overall condition is very good. Bright blade with some small dark spots and signs of sharpening. The makers mark on the ricasso has been stamped over with “UCI” and the number “15” in the same font and there is a divot. We suspect this is an ownership mark for a Hollywood prop shop or the like. Leather wrap is thin but still present with an intact wire wrap. Solid hilt. The scabbard has some denting but is overall in good condition.
The overall length is 40-1/2 inches.
The blade length is 34-1/2 inches.
