1850s Antique BELGIAN 12 Gauge Double Barrel SIDE x SIDE Percussion SHOTGUN
Belgian HOMESTEAD Hunting/Fowling Piece LIEGE PROOF
Here we present an antique Belgian Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1850s likely in Liege, Belgium. During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States.
This 12 gauge fowling piece was a sought after gauge, due to the ability to use it for medium or large size game, along with waterfowl. This has a relatively short 31-1/8 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods or traipsing through the marsh looking for ducks and geese. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle during the tumultuous times of the mid-1800s.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bores are in good shape. A few holes/dents appear to be repaired/filled on the right barrel. This example sports a solid stock. The forend has been repaired. Sharp wrist checkering. Finish on the barrels has matured to a deep brown patina. “JHM” is marked on the left barrel. Liege proofed.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
