1836 Mexican-American War AMES GLADIUS Antique U.S. M1832 FOOT ARTILLERY Sword
N.P. AMES “SHORT SWORD” with SCABBARD
Here we present an antique N.P. Ames U.S. Military Pattern Model 1832 Foot Artillery NCO Sword, manufactured in 1836 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Though the maker’s mark is very worn on this example, you can still see enough of the maker’s mark on the ricasso to show that it was made by the N.P. Ames Manufacturing Company. This model was the first sword contracted by the U.S. with the Ames Manufacturing Company of Springfield, and later Chicopee, Massachusetts, with production starting in 1832. In later years, it was also imported and supplied by W.H. Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As a personal side arm, it was intended for use by the regular or foot artillery regiments of the United States Army and remained in service until 1872 for use of foot artillerymen.
This short, broad sword harkens all the way back to the Roman gladius, which was revitalized with the French Model 1816 from which this sword was copied. A lot of people will say that, while this was a sword of relatively handy size, it made a better brush hacker than a weapon. If an artillery soldier has gone to his sword in the battle, one would think he could do far worse than a spear pointed short sword with a hefty, cleaving blade. Sure, it does not have the reach or hand protection of a cavalry saber, yet one would suspect that if it was good enough for the Romans, it was a formidable weapon in close quarters.
This Model 1832 features a classically styled cast brass hilt with scale texturing. The ricasso is marked with a small crown, along with a brass hilt. These swords were used all the way through the American Civil War. This sword is marked “UNITED/STATES/1836/TW and was martially inspected by “TW” Thomas Warner.
The overall condition is good. Straight blade with very slight bend at the tip. Patina throughout. Some of the makers address can be made out. Date of 1836 is clear. Inspection markings visible on top of the hand guard: initials “T.W. HKC” in an oval. Solid hilt. The leather scabbard is in very good condition.
