1833 DATED Nice Antique AMES US Contract Model 1833 DRAGOON Military Saber
MEXICAN AMERICAN WAR and CIVIL WAR Sword w/SCABBARD
Here we present an antique nice example of a U.S Contract Model 1833 Dragoon Saber and Scabbard made by the N.P. Ames Cutlery firm of Springfield, Massachusetts. The U.S. Regiment of Dragoons was organized on March, 1833 and a new pattern saber was authorized for their use. The new saber was similar to the British light cavalry saber of 1822. This Ames produced single edged blade is slightly curved with a heavy rounded quill back which runs its entire length. The Ames address in thinly hand etched in script near the hilt of the obverse with “N.P. AMES/CUTLER/SPRINGFIELD/1933”. The last number is worn and not sure if it is a “3” or possibly a “9”. The quillon is stamped with the military acceptance mark “WS”.
These swords are far more difficult to locate than most other patterns and saw extensive use in both the Mexican American War and the American Civil War. Many were in Southern arsenals at the outbreak of the Civil War. The overall length is 39-1/2 inches with the blade measuring 34 inches. This saber would likely have been used in the American Civil War by troops possibly on either side.
The overall condition is very good. Bright blade. Solid hilt all around. This example includes a scabbard that remains in good shape.
