1833 Dated Antique W.L. EVANS Contract U.S. M1816 Type II FLINTLOCK Musket
One of Only 1,500 Type II Muskets Produced
Here we present an antique W.L. Evans Contract Model 1816 Type II Flintlock Musket made circa 1833 in Evansburg, Pennsylvania. These muskets were made for the United States military on contract from 1825 to 1833 by W. L. Evans of Evansburg, Pennsylvania, also known as Valley Forge. Evans produced some 5,000 Type I muskets circa 1825 to 1830, has his name mis-spelled (W. L. Evens) on the lockplates on only the “Type One” muskets. The lock on this Type II longarm is correctly spelled “EVANS” and dated 1833 on the lock and the barrel tang with 1500 made that were dated 1832-1833. This musket is a smoothbore .69 caliber, single shot muzzleloader with a 42 inch barrel.
While the years in between the War of 1812 and the American Civil War may appear to be quiet, this period of American history was quite busy as more states and territories were born and settled, Native Americans were resettled, and both Native and slave rebellions were put down.
The overall condition is very good. Original flintlock. Dark patina throughout. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid throughout, showing use. The left stock flat and the top of the comb just forward of the butt plate have visible cartouches. There is a rack number stamped over the cartouche on the comb. There is a set of initials “MW” in a rectangle on the left side of the butt stock. There is a spot at the top of the wrist where it appears a uniform button or some other adornment once was. A rare, original flintlock Model 1816 US military musket!
