1 of 700 CIVIL WAR Antique ALLEN & WHEELOCK .44 Center Hammer ARMY Revolver
VERY SCARCE Revolver Made In 1861 and 1862
Here we present an antique Allen & Wheelock Center Hammer Army Percussion Revolver made in Worcester, Massachusetts, circa 1861-62. According to Flayderman, the Allen & Wheelock Center Hammer Army percussion revolver was manufactured in rather limited quantities, with production estimated by most published arms historians at only about 700 guns. These estimates are based primarily upon the “serial numbers’ of known surviving examples, though it is possible there were a few more, due to known duplicate serial number examples. No matter how many were actually produced, it is known that 536 were purchased by the Federal government in 1861. Nearly all those guns were subsequently issued to the 2nd & 3rd Michigan Volunteer Cavalry regiments. As these revolvers were purchased on the open market, they were not marked with any U.S. military sub-inspection or final inspection marks, including cartouches, as are found on the guns acquired via official Ordnance Department contracts.
The single action revolver has a six-shot cylinder solid frame and unique rack and pinion loading lever in which the forward portion of the trigger guard serves as the operating lever. The two-piece walnut grips have a high polish varnish finish. A fine ‘custom’ nickel Army with extensive engraving by Gustav Young and hand-carved ivory grips is thought to have been the personal weapon of Ethan Allen. Ethan Allen was a true family man, investing and partnering with a nephew in a New York sporting goods retailer, hiring another brother-in-law, Thomas Wheelock, who was eventually made a partner, and similarly hiring and later making partner his two sons-in-law Sullivan Forehand and Henry Wadsworth.
The overall condition is good+. This one wears an old nickel finish and shows use and weathering. The action is strong and works best when the hammer is cocked briskly. The bore is reflective with strong rifling. The grip show use and there is some minor chipping around the edges from long ago, otherwise solid.
