CIVIL WAR Antique AUSTRIAN .71 Cal. Model 1849 “GARIBALDI” Conversion Rifle
Converted from Tubelock to Percussion in Liege
Here we present an antique Austrian Model 1849 Garibaldi Conversion Rifle by Fruwirth, made circa 1854 in Vienna, Austria. This musket was originally built with a tubelock firing mechanism, but was converted in Liege, Belgium before being sold to the U.S. government during the American Civil War. Arms shortages were most acutely felt for the North in the early years of the war before domestic production was able to ramp up. Thousands of these rifles were imported by the Union and are known to have been issued to several Missouri militia units during the Civil War.
These .71 caliber weapons were produced in Austria and sold in large numbers to Garibaldi’s Italian revolutionaries, hence the name. When the Civil War broke out, these weapons were purchased by Northern arms procurers and modified to percussion in Liege before shipment to the United States.
The overall condition is very good. Deep, dark patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is in nice shape and sharply rifled. The stock is solid. The rear sight block and default V notch remains though the graduated leaf has been removed. The socket bayonet makes up for this rifle’s shorter, handier size as the blade is nearly 2 feet in length!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 32-1/8 inches.
