Antique DERINGER U.S. Model 1817 ORIGINAL PERCUSSION .58 Cal COMMON RIFLE
Rare, Late Henry Deringer Made; Breech Marked “P”
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1817 “Common Rifle” from Henry Deringer, made circa the early 1840s in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Deringer was a contractor to the government who made these rifles in flintlock—about 13,000 of them—but made some from the ground up in the percussion format. It is unknown just how many were made this way but not many. These have no signs of ever having been flintlock or being converted such as filled and ground holes in the lock, addition of nipple bolster, etc. These original percussion models are also only marked “P” for proofed on the left side of the barrel and lack inspector markings that would have been required by Ordnance. This one comes with the original steel ramrod as well as a very nice rear sight which features a fixed V notch with a flip up leaf that is notched at the top and also pierced through the middle with an aperture. These rifles remain a bit of a mystery as far as their destination but it has been posited that they could have fulfilled a state contract. In any case, the Model 1817 Common rifle is a handsome and unique rifle in the scope of US long arms. This one is even more unique.
The overall condition is good+. Bright finish. The action is excellent. The bore has some reflectivity to it with strong rifling. The walnut stock is solid with signs of use. The patchbox contains a nipple wrench/screwdriver combination tool.
